Favourite as good as Gold PDF Print E-mail

EACH day after work Doomben trainer Tracy Green's husband Les and her star racehorse Mr Hornblower settle down and enjoy a cold beer.

If it was a race to the fridge, it would be a toss-up who would start favourite even though Mr Hornblower has four legs and Les has only two.

Mr Hornblower had a low red cell blood count and we started to give him a Guinness, Green said.

Now he loves a beer and his favourite is XXXX Gold. He demands one every day.

By a strange coincidence Les has a penchant for the same brand.

Mr Hornblower is one of the main chances in the $100,000 Queensland Racing Quality Handicap (1200m) at Doomben tomorrow and celebrations will be big if he wins. The demon drink was responsible for Les buying Mr Hornblower in the first place and he was a little the worse for wear when he paid $3000 for him as a yearling.

He looks like the wild man from Borneo but really he's a big softie, was how Tracy described Les. Green said her husband was rotten at the sales and timidly told her what he had done the next day, but all has been forgiven as Mr Hornblower is the reigning Eye Liner winner.

The 53.5kg will help and he loves Doomben, Green said.

Normally he races very well when fresh and everything has gone well since he contracted the EI.

Mr Hornblower was to start his campaign in the Fosters Goldmarket at the washed-out Gold Coast meeting, which would have embarrassed the sponsor if he won, because of his rival brewery leanings.
